The Red Cow

Tucked away on Hinckley Road in the picturesque village of Kirby Muxloe, The Red Cow offers more than just your typical pub experience. It’s the kind of place where traditional British charm meets modern dining, all within a welcoming, wheelchair-accessible setting. Whether you're flying solo or out for a casual meet-up, this gem in Leicester makes every visit feel like a treat.

Let’s start with the atmosphere-relaxed, cozy, and unmistakably British. Think warm wood tones, outdoor seating when the sun’s out, and a buzz that’s neither too loud nor too quiet. The vibe here lends itself perfectly to solo diners just as much as it does to groups unwinding over a pint. And speaking of pints, beer lovers are in for a treat. The Red Cow boasts an impressive beer selection featuring beloved names like Guinness, Peroni, and a variety of craft and local brews that pair beautifully with almost anything on the menu.

Food-wise, this place doesn’t hold back. For starters, the prawn cocktail delivers that nostalgic punch-refreshing and light yet satisfyingly creamy. Fans of heartier beginnings can opt for the arancini or a rich pâté, both of which make great companions to a glass of red from their curated wine list. If you're more of a soup-and-bread person, their freshly made soup of the day always brings a comforting warmth, especially during chillier afternoons.

Moving on to mains, the fish and chips here are as classic as they come-golden, beer-battered, and crisp on the outside, flaky on the inside. The lasagne is a favorite for good reason-layered with just the right balance of meat, sauce, and cheese. Craving something with a rustic twist? Try the chicken pot pie-creamy, savory, and wrapped in a buttery pastry crust that flakes apart like a dream.

For meat lovers, The Red Cow’s Sunday roasts are a must. Whether you go for the roast beef or the roast turkey, you’re in for a plate loaded with all the proper trimmings-fluffy Yorkshire puddings, seasonal veg, rich gravy, and perfectly crisped potatoes. If you want something a bit more upscale, the duo of lamb or the surf and turf brings that elevated gastro-pub edge, ideal for those moments when you’re feeling just a little bit fancy.

And yes, desserts are not to be skipped here. From the silky-smooth crème brûlée to the comforting warmth of a custard pudding or the indulgent pudding tasting platter, sweet tooths are spoiled for choice. It’s the kind of menu where every course competes to be the highlight.

Of course, no review of The Red Cow would be complete without mentioning its accessibility features-wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, seating, and toilet, making it genuinely inclusive for all guests. Add to that a wide range of offerings including spirits, cocktails, and wine, and you’ve got a spot that easily transitions from casual daytime hangout to a cozy evening destination.

It’s not just the food and drink that make this place memorable, but the way it all comes together-comfort, consistency, and just the right touch of flair. Whether you’re looking to wind down with a pint of Pepsi Max, sip on a cocktail, or simply enjoy a quiet lunch alone, The Red Cow ticks the right boxes. And with dine-in, takeaway, delivery, and even outdoor seating options available, there’s no excuse not to give it a go.

We visited to try the festive menu for my wife's birthday. For starters we enjoyed BAKED SCALLOPS & KING PRAWNS and KING PRAWN & SMOKED SALMONCOCKTAIL. Both were delicious and the scallops were very well cookedFor our main course of us had the oz RIB-EYE STEAK and the HAND-CARVED TURKEY BREAST with all the trimmings (after adding a bowl of pigs in blankets). Whilst both our steaks were cooked a little more than the medium rare we requested, they were both extremely tasty and complimented by the peppercorn & beef dripping sauces. The turkey orders were also very well cooked and presented, still succulent and the vegetables extremely tasty. For desert between we had SALTED CARAMEL PROFITEROLES, a STICKY TOFFEE CHRISTMAS PUDDING and a BRAMLEY APPLE & MINCE PIECRUMBLE. Each of us enjoyed what we'd ordered and my wife and I shared the hot puddings and both agreed the apple and mince pie crumble was the best!Service was great, unrushed yet attentive. Checking we were ok and needed anything throughout. The atmosphere in the Red Cow is really good and it was clean throughout.A great experience and we'll certainly be returning soon.
